The Experience

An adventure that never stopped surprising me

My trip to South Africa lasted seven weeks, from May 9th to June 26th, 2026. I had the immense privilege of living this experience at the Stellenbosch Academy of Sport, a world-class high-performance sports facility. My adventure started on a high note and never stopped surprising me.

Simply walking through the centre made me realize how fortunate I was. The rugby team I worked with during my first few weeks was none other than the Springbok Sevens — world champions and exceptional rugby players. Beyond their titles and achievements, I met people who were genuinely kind and welcoming. It took very little time for me to feel at home.

In fact, that was the feeling I had from the moment I arrived at SAS. I was welcomed warmly, and everyone made sure I felt comfortable. After only a few days, friendships had formed and unforgettable memories were already being created.

A few weeks later, the Junior Springboks arrived to prepare for the Rugby World Cup. A tour had been organized to ensure they would be fully prepared for their campaign in Georgia in July 2026. I had the privilege of accompanying the team to all of their matches: from Rondebosch High School against Chile, to Wynberg High School against Fiji, and finally Paul Roos Gymnasium in Stellenbosch against Georgia.

Strapping, mobilizations, post-match treatments, sideline support, locker-room presence — everything was there. Every opportunity was given to help me grow as a sports physiotherapist. I was also able to work with injured players throughout their rehabilitation by designing specific training sessions, both in the gym and on the field. It was a true pleasure for me. This experience allowed me to combine my background as a rugby player, a physiotherapy student, and someone who has personally experienced injury and rehabilitation.

I loved working with this group. The players and staff were exceptional, but above all, they were wonderful people. My experience here was a dream from the very first day until the last. I never stopped looking forward to going to work every morning. It was impossible to grow tired of it, and incredibly difficult to leave.

South Africa is a magnificent country, not only because of its breathtaking landscapes, but also because of its culture and its people. There is a strong work ethic here; nothing is handed to you, and people genuinely fight to achieve their goals. The people are kind and care deeply about others, whether they come from here or elsewhere.

Unfortunately, part of the South African population does not have the opportunity to live in good conditions, and I felt it was important to acknowledge that. Coming here helped me understand that there are places in the world where life is much more difficult, where simply getting by can be a challenge.

One of the most important lessons I will take away from this experience is how fortunate we are to be healthy, to have healthy loved ones, to have food on our tables, a roof over our heads, and clothes to wear. These things may seem obvious, but when you witness some of the situations around Cape Town, you become more aware of them than ever before. There are things we simply have no right to complain about.

I would like to sincerely thank all the people who made this experience possible and so enjoyable.

For me, this experience has been, above all else, a human adventure. I met so many wonderful people and made true friends. I am convinced that this is not the end and that our paths will cross again. I am deeply grateful for the precious time we shared together, and I will never forget any of you.

Ten years ago, there was a young boy who dreamed of becoming a professional rugby player. Today, that boy has had the opportunity to work alongside some of the best players in the world within a world-class training environment.

Three years ago, there was a student discovering physiotherapy for the very first time. Today, that student has lived an experience that will shape his professional career for many years to come.

But above all, today, there is someone who has grown.

Thank you all for helping create one of the most beautiful memories of my life.

Sharp.
